This antique waterman marionette was designed and processed by Jan Benda around 1940.
In the case of the sale of this puppet, we dedicate half of the amount collected to the development of PUP - Puppet University Prague
The whole marionette is carved from linden wood, including the face, eyes and shoes. The water spirit's costume is made of various types of textiles, his red vest contrasts beautifully with the green color of his pants. Also notice the webs that are visible between his fingers. With its astonished expression, it is a truly original historical piece.
The materials used to make this puppet are original and of very high quality. Jan Benda (1897-1967) was a Czech graphic artist, draftsman and later a puppeteer. After being wounded on the Italian front, he was employed at the Archaeological Institute in Prague. He then began working with various Czech puppeteers to design and process puppets, which he also modeled. Some of his puppet designs were processed by the company of the Czech carver Josef Kalous.
My 17 year old daughter absolutely adores Annie! As she said, “She’s not just a doll—she’s a work of art!” This is an exquisite marionette. Obviously made with great artistry and attention to detail. Beyond lovely!
