This marionette was created around 1940 by the Czech carver Karel Krob.
In the case of the sale of this puppet, we dedicate half of the amount collected to the development of PUP - Puppet University Prague
This antique Chinese figure is in its original condition, hand-carved and dressed in traditional fabrics. This man is made of wood, his hat is decorated with real feathers, his shirt is satin and his trousers and vest are made of gold fabric with a pattern. He complements his originality with an interesting expression and a red robe that flutters behind him. The Chinese merchant was a common figure at the turn of the 19th-20th century in puppetry, he appeared in many marionette plays. We are really glad that we have this piece in our collection and we can present it to you now.
Karel Krob (1904 - 1974) originally trained as a shoemaker, but from a young age he was fascinated by the puppetry world. That is why he also devoted all his free time to carving and making marionettes. He continued the tradition of Czech puppeteers, because he carved marionettes as he remembered them from the marionette shows of his childhood. Initially, he made marionettes only for the pleasure of his children, acquaintances and friends. Later, he carved marionettes for puppet ensembles, including the Spejbl and Hurvínek Theater. Today, his works are represented in a number of museum and private collections and puppet ensembles.
My 17 year old daughter absolutely adores Annie! As she said, “She’s not just a doll—she’s a work of art!” This is an exquisite marionette. Obviously made with great artistry and attention to detail. Beyond lovely!
