This tender-looking queen is wearing a cloth crown, a beautiful green piece of jewelry on her dress with lace details on the sleeves. Her hair, like the rest of her body, is carved from linden wood and is hand-painted. Her eyes have not lost their spark with age and are still beautifully deep blue. There are many secrets hidden in her smile, which she keeps hidden for the good of her country.
Josef Allesy (1810-1894), born Gianpiero Alessi, is of Italian descent. He came to Bohemia around 1830 and worked there as a carver and conservator in churches. His marionettes were extremely anatomically elaborated with very good mobility and in the second half of the 19th century they gained extraordinary popularity with many Czech puppeteers. Currently, his marionettes can be found, for example, in the theater department of the National Museum and in the private collections of other puppeteers.
My 17 year old daughter absolutely adores Annie! As she said, “She’s not just a doll—she’s a work of art!” This is an exquisite marionette. Obviously made with great artistry and attention to detail. Beyond lovely!
