This marionette was created by the Italian carver Josef Allesy in Prague around 1840.
This antique 19th-century marionette has many original details. It has a movable jaw, a number of teeth in the mouth, claws on the hands and, instead of one foot, of course a hoof. Devil's plaid pants are decorated with fur, he is wearing a coat with beautiful decorated sleeves and you must not miss his tail.
Josef Allesy (1810-1894), born Gianpiero Alessi, is of Italian descent. He came to Bohemia around 1830 and worked there as a carver and conservator in churches. His marionettes were extremely anatomically elaborated with very good mobility and in the second half of the 19th century they gained extraordinary popularity with many Czech puppeteers. Currently, his marionettes can be found, for example, in the theater department of the National Museum and in the private collections of other puppeteers.
It’s adorable and so much fun to play with. My 4 year old loves watching the marionette dance!
